Please join us on September 21 and 22, 2007 in the mountains of Philippi, West Virginia for Targeting Hope: The Fifth Rural and Small Cities Development Conference presented by World Vision Appalachia. This conference is for non-profit, faith-based organizations, church and para-church ministries, organizations that wish to partner with faith-based organizations and individuals participating in changing their communities. The cost of the conference is $50, which includes the $25 membership fee for CCDA.

Carole Dawn Brinkley - Developing your leadership style
Carole Dawn Brinkley is the Grant Specialist with Mission West Virginia, Inc. She holds two Master's Degrees, one in Business Management and one in Education. She has twenty years experience in non-profit services, management, and early care and education. She has served as a program provider, an executive director, a grant writer, a fund raiser, a teacher and a college professor in Non-Profit Management and Leadership. David Blackstone - How to Incorporate a Small Group Ministry
For the past four years David Blackistone has served as the Ministry Steward for Small Groups at the Lake of the Woods Church, a multi-denominational church near Fredericksburg, VA. During this time the number of groups in the church has doubled to 26, and almost 300 people are members of a group. In this role David has worked with an Assistant Pastor to develop a vision statement and a leadership training curriculum and to present workshops on various aspects of Small Group leadership and life.
Prior to this experience David and his wife led a Small Group in their home for 21 years at a large church in Fairfax, VA. God blessed this group with growth, and twice it divided to form new groups.
David was born in Washington, DC and graduated from Duke University in 1958. He served in the U.S. Navy for 22 years and retired with the rank of Commander. He then began a second career in Christian ministry by working as a lay person with communication and computer systems on a large church staff in Fairfax, VA for 14 years. Following this he served seven years on the national staff of a pro-life ministry, retiring as Chief Financial Officer and Vice-president for Administration.
David and his wife Donna have been married 46 years. They have two children, David Jr. and Deborah, and four grand-children.
Dolphus Weary - "I Ain't Comin' Back"
From a college basketball standout to a racial reconciliation activist, Dr. Dolphus Weary is a veteran among African American pro-family leaders.
He serves as executive director of Mission Mississippi - a statewide unity initiative designed "to build relationships and to call persons of all races and denominational backgrounds to reconciliation."
Mission Mississippi began about 10 years ago as a prayer movement in Jackson, Mississippi. The initial efforts involved a core group of 12 to 15 individuals who gathered to pray in a police precinct located in a rough area of town. Over the years, it has developed into a multi-faceted ministry that encompasses weekly prayer breakfast meetings, youth rallies and retreats, church partnership picnics, government-focused prayer initiatives and related activities.
Dolphus currently serves on the board of World Vision US and is a long time supporter of World Vision Appalachia.
Eric Iverson - Change in the Hood
Eric Iverson is a twenty-year urban youth ministry veteran, currently serving as the Multicultural Integrity Director for the short-term youth missions organization, YouthWorks. Eric teaches and trains nationally around issues of poverty, race, justice, and youth ministry. His passion for developing youth and empowering those who serve them is a calling that Eric has answered and is excited to share.

Dr. Roger Lohmann serves as the Director of the NOVA Institute at West Virginia University. The NOVA Institute is a teaching, research and training center in the Division of Social Work. The institute is the hub of an organic network of those interested in furthering a multi-national independent sector of nonprofit organizations and voluntary action, opportunities for citizen participation in deliberation and dialogue, and service learning.
Dr. Lohmann has been at WVU for more than 25 years. He is the author "Breaking Even: Financial Management in Nonprofit Human Services (1980), "The Commons" New Perspectives on Nonprofit Organization, "Voluntary Action and Philanthropy (1992), co-author of "Social Administration" (2002) and co-editor of Rural Social Work Practice (2005). He has also written more than two-dozen journal articles and more than 75 conference papers.
Marilyn Mulvihill - Inviting, Educating and Encouraging Volunteers
This workshop will help you to find those people who will catch your vision and work along side you to bring it to reality. You will also learn how to give them the tools they need to make your organization successful and to bless them as they do so. Gift inventories and personality surveys will be included to help you manage your team like a pro.
Todd Bratulich - Jesus the Troublemaker
Examine the message that Christ brought radical change and a new vision for communities. We will be taking a fresh look at how the Gospel challenges the status quo.
Melanie Jones - Understanding Thinking Styles in An Organizational Context
Join Dr. Jones as she explores the different ways that organizations may help or hinder their employees' success through verbal and non-verbal communication.
Deb Fowler - Financial Literacy
Learn ways that you, your church or organization may achieve financial independence. Deb Fowler will discuss the role of the church as it relates to community members' financial freedom and responsibility.
