Myanmar earthquake: Facts, FAQs, and how to help

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar near Mandalay — the country’s second-largest city — on March 28, 2025, causing widespread destruction and casualties in both Myanmar and neighboring Thailand. The devastation has been severe, with immediate concerns about vulnerable communities. The death toll has surpassed 2,700, with thousands more injured.

“We are particularly worried about children who may have been traveling to school at the time of the earthquake and now may be trapped under rubble and separated from parents. Our immediate priority is ensuring access to food, shelter, clean water, and healthcare,” said Dr. Kyi Minn, World Vision’s national director in Myanmar.

What is the current situation?

As of April 1, 2025, the aftermath of 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28 continues to unfold with ongoing rescue and relief efforts. The disaster has affected Myanmar, Thailand, and other neighboring countries.

Myanmar

Casualties and damage:

  • The death toll has surpassed 2,700, with thousands more injured.
  • The epicenter near Mandalay and Sagaing caused widespread destruction:
    • The Ma Soe Yane monastery collapsed, and the former royal palace sustained damage.
    • Mandalay airport is closed due to a damaged runway.
    • In Sagaing, a 90-year-old bridge collapsed, and sections of the highway to Yangon were damaged.
    • In Naypyidaw, multiple homes partially collapsed.

Rescue and relief efforts:

  • Rescue operations and relief efforts are ongoing but face significant challenges due to damaged infrastructure slowing access to impacted areas and power outages disrupting communication and emergency services.
  • Thousands of people are spending nights outdoors due to the destruction of their homes and fear of further quakes.

Thailand

Impact in Bangkok: The quake’s tremors were felt in Bangkok, over 800 miles from the epicenter. A 30-story State Audit Office building under construction near collapsed, resulting in at least 18 deaths and leaving 78 people missing.

The earthquake was shallow, increasing its destructive impact. Local authorities and rescue teams are working to assist the affected communities, while people in neighboring regions, including Bangkok, experienced strong tremors and widespread panic.

China

The earthquake affected China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, with damage and injuries reported in the border city of Ruili.

How is World Vision responding to the 2025 Myanmar earthquake?

World Vision is deeply concerned about the earthquake’s impact on children and families. Our teams in Myanmar are actively assessing the impact and mobilizing emergency relief efforts. We aim to support approximately 500,000 people with vital aid in the following areas:

  • Food assistance
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene support
  • Hygiene kits and other essential items
  • Child protection programs

Having been present in Myanmar since 1993, World Vision is committed to delivering lifesaving aid and standing with affected communities as they begin the recovery process.

While communication services, electricity shortages, and severe damage to roads and highways remain challenging, our dedicated teams are working tirelessly to reach those in needed. “Our staff are trained in disaster responses and have mobilized to find out exactly what is needed.  Please pray for the survivors of this quake and our staff,” said Minn.
