Why World Vision is in Timor-Leste
Timor-Leste (East Timor) gained independence from Indonesia in 2002, after a disputed declaration in 1999. The ensuing clashes destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, including homes, water supply systems, and schools. A fragile state, Timor-Leste experienced instability and delayed recovery due in part to a military strike in 2006 and a rebel attack in 2008, but the country is now enjoying one of its longest periods of peace post-independence, with successful elections held in 2012. Timor-Leste is one of the only Christian nations in southeast Asia (the other being the Philippines).
