Why World Vision is in Brazil
Brazil has been one of the countries hardest hit by COVID-19 in the world. The health crisis has had significant impacts for Brazilian families affected by the disease, and for the economy: Small entrepreneurs have suffered from lost income and isolation. As a result of business closures, increasing unemployment, and higher prices for essential goods, Brazilians are experiencing rising rates of hunger and malnutrition. Also, the migratory crisis of Venezuelans crossing into countries like Brazil in search of better living conditions continues amid the challenges of the pandemic. Thanks to strong partnerships, in 2020 World Vision reached over 10 million Brazilians — including more than 500,000 children and teenagers directly reached — with programs focused on pandemic response, food insecurity, and support for Venezuelan migrants. Families received hygiene kits to protect themselves against COVID-19, donations of food baskets for those facing hunger, child and adolescent protection resources, school supplies for kids’ return to in-person classes, and more. We’re prioritizing prevention, awareness, and hygiene behavior change as Brazil continues to grapple with the pandemic.
