YANGON (March 28, 2025) Global Christian humanitarian agency World Vision is responding in the aftermath of this morning’s powerful earthquake in Myanmar, a country already deeply impacted by poverty and displacement.

The 7.7 magnitude quake struck central Myanmar midday. Authorities reported that more than 150 people had been killed and more than 730 injured, with those figures expected to rise. It has been difficult to establish the death and injury toll in the worst-hit areas due to communication challenges.

The earthquake toppled homes, government buildings, stores and places of worship, and damaged hospitals, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. The epicenter was near the city of Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. In the capital, Naypidaw, the airport control tower collapsed, while Mandalay airport was closed following runway damage.

World Vision response teams will prioritize ensuring access to essentials like clean water, shelter, food assistance, and more for those who have been impacted.

“Even before the earthquake, many children in Myanmar were already struggling as they were displaced, deprived of education, and facing food insecurity. This disaster has only deepened their suffering, turning an already difficult situation into a humanitarian crisis,” said Dr. Kyi Minn, national director of World Vision in Myanmar.

“I urge supporters to dig deep and please support children and their families who have survived this disaster. They are going to need emergency aid to get them through the days and months ahead. Many will likely be living out in the open following damage to their homes or due to nervousness about going back indoors following ongoing tremors. Children will be especially vulnerable and very frightened. Please pray for those who survived and our staff as we respond.”

World Vision has been working in Myanmar since 1991 to improve the lives of children and families through food assistance, health care, education, and child protection.
