Why World Vision is in Armenia
Armenia is in the midst of intense political conflict. The country has experienced various border attacks, a detrimental blockade, and violations against the basic rights of many communities.
Since 2020, conflict and instability in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory in the southeast region of Armenia, have led to multiple humanitarian issues. A blockade of the Lachin corridor caused widespread political, economic, and social challenges for Armenians. In September 2022, many towns and villages along the border were shelled, putting children in harm’s way.
In response, World Vision staff in Armenia have leveraged networking opportunities to provide first-aid assistance across the country for those affected by the armed conflict. As advocates against human trafficking, we are supporting legislation that prevents exploitation in Armenia. Additionally, World Vision’s support of the “Community Level Access to Social Services” (CLASS) project has made a great impact within many vulnerable communities. Over 3,000 people received humanitarian assistance, and more than 50,000 people — including 20,000 children — received social support and counseling.
