Why World Vision is in Honduras
Honduras continues to struggle from a severe drought, violence, lack of access to quality education, and unemployment.
The drought, which began over five years ago, has decimated staple crops of beans and maize by up to 80% in some areas, devastating many farmers and rural communities. In addition, Honduras is facing high rates of violence, with the homicide rate being more than double the regional rate. This violence, along with an education system that hasn’t recovered from the COVID-19 pandemic, has kept hundreds of thousands of children out of school. The government’s lack of investment in school supplies and maintenance of infrastructure has transferred the burden of public education costs to families — pushing those in poverty further to the margins. Young people, particularly women, face high unemployment rates.
In response, World Vision has implemented a variety of programs that focus on increasing access to quality education, preventing violence, and strengthening livelihoods. The THRIVE Project is helping rural communities become resilient to extreme weather. Over 2 million children and youth have been reached through our programs over the past year.
