In 2017, the Water Institute at UNC (WI) and World Vision World Vision undertook a four-part survey to evaluate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) conditions in 14 lower-and middle-income countries (LMICs). This included an assessment of WASH services in over 2,000 HCFs in World Vision Area Programs (APs) and in other rural comparison areas. This survey was designed as a follow-up to an evaluation conducted in 2014 in 10 African countries with World Vision programs: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia. To enable a comparison and to build off of the 2014 study, the 2017 survey was conducted in the same ten countries, with the addition of four countries: Honduras, India, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. The key findings from this survey provide important context for the development and implementation of future programs to increase access to WASH services within healthcare facilities.
