ENSURE (Enhancing Nutrition, Stepping Up Resilience and Enterprise) was a seven-year USAID-funded project to empower and capacitate poor and rural households to become more food secure. Specifically, the goal was to increase long-term food security among chronically food insecure and rural households in 66 wards in six districts of the Manicaland and Masvingo provinces, where food insecurity and stunting were higher than the national average. Promoting gender equity in decision-making, access to financial services, and participation in project activities were cross-cutting priorities, as were environmental protection and disaster risk reduction. ENSURE’s approach, captured in its theory of change, was to expand knowledge, increase capacity to produce food and income, provide access to savings, and build community assets that provide greater resilience to disasters and environmental degradation. Through ENSURE, over 215,000 vulnerable Zimbabweans were positively impacted.
